Ponte Nuovo

Gli edifici adiacenti il Ponte Nuovo ospitavano la Dogana Austriaca attraverso la quale passava la strada Vercellese che portava al Ticino, confine tra il Lombardo-Veneto ed il Regno di Sardegna.
Gli Austriaci non riuscirono a farlo saltare così come avevano fatto con quelli di Boffalora e di Ponte Vecchio.
Esso rimase così insieme al ponte della ferrovia, posto a sud di quello stradale, l’unico passaggio attraverso il Naviglio Grande.
Teatro di accaniti scontri dall’esito incerto venne conquistato e perso più volte.
Solo l’arrivo da nord verso Boffalora e Magenta del Generale Mac Mahon provocò l’arretramento degli Austriaci che permise ai Francesi della Brigata Wimpffen e al 2° Battaglione Zuavi della Guardia della Brigata Clér di attestarsi sulla sponda sinistra del Naviglio Grande.

Les bâtiments adjacents au Ponte Nuovo abritaient la douane autrichienne, traversée par la route de Vercelli menant au Tessin, frontière entre le Royaume lombard-vénitien et le Royaume de Sardaigne.
Les Autrichiens ne parvinrent pas à le faire sauter, comme ils l’avaient fait pour ceux de Boffalora et de Ponte Vecchio.
Il demeura ainsi, avec le pont ferroviaire situé au sud du pont routier, le seul point de passage sur le Naviglio Grande.
Théâtre de combats acharnés à l’issue incertaine, il fut conquis et perdu à plusieurs reprises.
Ce ne fut que l’arrivée par le nord, en direction de Boffalora et Magenta, du général Mac Mahon qui provoqua le repli des Autrichiens, permettant aux Français de la brigade Wimpffen et au 2e bataillon de zouaves de la Garde de la brigade Clér de s’établir sur la rive gauche du Naviglio Grande.

Die Gebäude neben dem Ponte Nuovo beherbergten den österreichischen Zoll, durch den die Straße von Vercelli verlief, die zum Tessin führte, der Grenze zwischen Lombardei-Venetien und dem Königreich Sardinien.
Die Österreicher konnten sie nicht sprengen, wie sie es mit den Brücken von Boffalora und Ponte Vecchio getan hatten.
Sie blieb somit zusammen mit der Eisenbahnbrücke, die sich südlich der Straßenbrücke befand, die einzige Passage über den Naviglio Grande.
Schauplatz heftiger Auseinandersetzungen mit ungewissem Ausgang, wurde sie mehrmals erobert und wieder verloren.
Erst die Ankunft von General Mac Mahon von Norden in Richtung Boffalora und Magenta führte zum Rückzug der Österreicher, der es den Franzosen der Brigade Wimpffen und dem 2. Bataillon der Garde-Zuavi der Brigade Clér ermöglichte, sich am linken Ufer des Naviglio Grande niederzulassen.

The buildings adjacent to Ponte Nuovo housed the Austrian Customs House, through which the Vercelli Road passed en route to the Ticino River – the border between Lombardy–Venetia and the Kingdom of Sardinia.
The Austrians failed to demolish it, unlike the bridges at Boffalora and Ponte Vecchio.
It remained, together with the railway bridge, located south of the road, the only passage across the Naviglio Grande.
The site of fierce and inconclusive fighting, it was captured and lost multiple times.
Only the arrival of General Mac Mahon from the north, toward Boffalora and Magenta, forced the Austrians to retreat, allowing the French of the Wimpffen Brigade and the 2nd Battalion of the Zouaves of the Clér Brigade to establish a foothold on the left bank of the Naviglio Grande.
